Race Recap:
Tough Weekend for OTR
August 21st , 2010, Waterford, CT: It was a tough weekend for the truck and crew of Overtime Racing. The weekend started Thursday, August 18th, running the feature event at Thompson International Speedway with the New England Truck Series. After 3 rounds of practice, the trucks were lined up without a heat race. As a guest driver to this series, the #0 of Howard Payne was to start at the rear of the field. It was a heated battle for the lead on lap 1, with the #12 of Derek Chriss overtaken by the #16 of Willy Auchmoody at the drop of the green. It was a 3 way battle by lap 2 between Auchmoody, the #83 of Gee Perry, and the #0 of Howard Payne. With Payne all the way on the outside coming out of turn 4, the #83 of Gee Perry clipped the left rear quarter panel of Payne and sent him into the grass. Unfortunately for Payne, as he tried to dig himself out of the grass, he made "forward progress." Therefore, no caution flag flew. After 3 laps of trying, Payne made his way free, and was determined to fight his way back to the field. The 20 lap feature event continued caution free, and Payne completed the feature 3 laps down. The victory went to the #3 of point leader Andy Lindeman. Payne was credited with a 5th place finish.
After working on the truck to repair all damages from Thursday night's feature, the crew of Overtime Racing returned to the Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night for what they hoped to be a great night of racing. It was back to victory lane after the 8 lap heat race. With things looking up, Payne was scheduled to start to the outside of rookie competitor Corey Coates in the #75. At the drop of the green, Payne took a hard charge to claim the lead from the outside lane. Coming to the start/finish line, Payne had the lead with point leader Allen Coates following in 2nd. On lap 7, Payne gained some ground on the field as the team trucks of Coates and the #94 of Keith Rocco battled side by side for 2nd. It was lap 16 that th e#90 of Coates started looking to make a pass for the lead and after one lap he was able to take the lead, followed by his teammate Rocco for 2nd. Payne would not settle for 3rd. With 2 to go, Payne went to the inside coming out of turn two making it 3 wide on the backstretch and retook the lead. It looked like it was a good night for Payne until the final turn. Coming out of turn 4, checkered flags in sight, the #90 of Allen Coates on the inside made contact with Payne. The #90 truck went airborne over the front end of Payne as the #94 of Rocco avoided the wreckage on the outside for the win. Payne still moving forward was able to claim a 2nd place finish with a wrecked race truck. The #90 of Allen Coates received a black flag from the Waterford Officials and was sent to the rear of the field for overagressive driving. Although the truck crossed the start/finish line in pieces, Overtime Racing was able to come away from the weekend with a podium finish.
